There are many things to consider when you are traveling abroad, particularly for an extended time period. The Bureau of Consular Affairs, part of the U.S. State Department provides useful information for travelers and expatriates, including information about health and safety plan options. This bureau also has travel warnings and other such useful information available to the public.

Part of any good health and safety plan is to register with a U.S. embassy or consulate. This will allow the authorities to better assist you in an emergency while you are out of the country.
