A great idea for a health lesson plan for high school teachers is to teach students about nutrition and their consumerism. The objective of the activity is to learn about the consumer health aspects of nutrition.

To properly teach this health lesson plan, the teacher must bring to class a food package (a bag of chips, Hostess cupcake, or granola bar, for example), and envelopes for each student in the class.

Students should be taught, during a nutrition unit, a health lesson plan about the labeling of food. Every food manufacturer is required to have certain items on their food’s package. This information includes: the name of the product, address of the manufacturer, nutrition information about calories, fat grams, fiber, etc., serving size, servings per container, and percentage of daily values.

For this health lesson plan to be effective, students should be allowed to bring a packaged snack to class. After enjoying their snacks, students should be asked to look for the name and address of the manufacturer. They will write down the names and the address of the manufacturer of the item they had eaten. From here, students will write a letter to the manufacturer.

Students have the option during this health lesson plan to write about one of the following:

A. Compliment the company on the item. B. Complain if they find something wrong. C. Tell about why they chose this item. (Commercials, package color, taste, friends like it). D. Make suggestions on how to make the item better.

The students will write the letter, put their name and return address on it, address an envelope and the school participates in this health lesson plan by sending the letters out. Students have a very high likelihood of receiving a response from the company for this activity. Responses can then be shared and analyzed by the class.
